Cannot help it but think of Jurong area in Singapore when I read the name of the show, but this is actually set in the upper west side of New York City. A tragic love story they say, and it was. Taking inspiration from Romeo and Juliet, this Broadway musical really does resemble the old classic. It revolves around 2 individuals, Tony, a former member of Jets (Whites) who tragically fell in love with Maria, sister of rival gang leader Bernardo from the Sharks (Puerto Ricans). I do not know how well the gang members fight, but they sure can dance!
Although it was my first time watching this play, the storyline was really rather predictable (as with most plays anyway). However I was in awe with the performers’ well-synchronized dance scenes, and their expressive acting, coupled with hilarious lines at certain parts was really entertaining! Although I personally found the first act slightly draggy but I still cannot reconcile how fast both Tony and Maria fell in love and how Maria could still get physical with Tony the night he found out Tony killed her brother. Maybe I am a little 0ld-fashioned!
