Chicken Little

[Media Invite]

Wow, it has already been 12 years since the animation Chicken Little was shown! I am quite sure most of us would have watched the movie at least once and know of the story right? When I told the kiddos we were going to catch Chicken Little musical by Singapore Repertory Theatre, they got excited and also nodded enthusiastically when I asked if they remembered the story. They had their own expectations of the show for sure, asking me how they were going to act out the scenes in the movie too!

Always amazing to see how just 5 talented artistes (Alyssa Lie, Dwayne Lau, Ann Lek, Natalie Yeap and Crenshaw Yeo) could sing, act and bring multiple characters in the story alive! Louie was pretty scared of the dark but as the performance went on, he went from closing his eyes to laughing out loud at the funny antics of the various characters. The older ones were able to catch the morale of the story, with Leroy even chipping in with his own interpretation "don't let your brothers and sisters make you unhappy!" when I asked him what he learnt! You have to check out this great show yourself, if the sky falling this time round, or was it an acorn? I myself was surprised to find out that Chicken Little (Alyssa Lie) was a girl.

There are only 10am shows on weekdays, and two shows (am and pm) on weekends till 08 Dec 2017 only. For more information and booking, please check out this Sistic page.

We thoroughly enjoyed the morning Singapore Repertory Theatre and thank you for inviting our family for the review!

Brick or Treat 2017

[Media Invite]

I had to purposely take leave to bring the kiddos to LEGOLAND Malaysia because they had been missing the rides they loved for quite a while. Stacci was so looking forward shooting her powers in LEGO NINJAGO The Ride while the two older ones cannot wait to take their rollercoaster rides too! So off we went for a weekend of LEGO fun!

Spook-Tacular Costume Contest (14/15 Oct and 20/21 Oct)

“Pa pa, why do they choose who laughs the scariest? And then proceed to choose the one who screamed and make people laugh?” Kids sometimes asks the hardest question. I knew for a fact that the contest was a light-hearted one, more or less to drum up excitement for the crowd and to give all the kids who dressed up, a good time but there are winners and for judges to choose winners based on who screams the loudest for the Spook-Tacular Costume Contest was a just a little tad hard for me to explain to the kiddos. In any case, Leroy was still had his little limelight that night as he was shortlisted as one of the top 10, but too bad he didn’t had the last “laugh” even though he was really in his element as Spider Boy.

Sensing the disappointment in them, we were determined to do a little better by returning for another night. We knew why Stacci wasn’t selected the first night even though she was dressed in my masterpiece self-made Wonder Woman costume, because she was kind of terrified and even teared. But it was heartening to hear from her that she was determine to give it another try in her Spider Girl costume and even did a split on stage on the second night. Steffi also got into her elaborate Iron Patriot suit which drew gasps from many as she strutted her stuff. This time all the three kiddos made the cut for the top 10 on the last night and went up for round two. Who would’ve thought that the winner selection criteria changed to whoever danced the best this time? So while the rest of the others danced freely in their costumes, my Steffi struggled with her full suit, while Leroy and Stacci had to deal with badly fogged masks. Finally when the emcee asked who should be the winner for the Costume Contest, even fellow contestants were cheering for Steffi, but ultimately it went to someone else.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, especially having to lug the costume over the causeway via transport with the kiddos. I felt that I had somewhat failed the kiddos too, but my main grouse would really have to be how little weightage was given to the costume part. I did try to console the kiddos (and myself) that perhaps they were not spooky but then again superheroes had always been one of the genre for Halloween dress-ups right? Having said all that, it is never easy to play judge and they had their own reasons for their choices, though I did end up imparting some very good life lessons to the kids, such as the following –

  1. If at first you don’t succeed, try again.
  2. It is always important to be prepared, but even more so to expect the unexpected.
  3. One needs to be confident but even more important to have humility to accept defeat.
  4. Disappointment is inevitable in life, one needs to learn how to bounce back and come back stronger.

So Why Visit?

Barring the little episode that we encountered above, Halloween period is still one of the best times to visit LEGOLAND Malaysia because of the great savings and awesome treats that the family will get to enjoy. Let me share with you why –

1) Free child (3-11) Admission – This is the most important. Dress up your children and bring them to the ticketing window to redeem complimentary tickets for them! What’s Halloween without dressing up?
2) Spooky Trail – Go up to the booth no. 1 right after you enter to collect a brochure (only for kids). Proceed to LEGO Kingdom area to get the remaining 5 stamps and redeem a goodie bag at booth number 6 near the stage. Lots of useful stuff like coloring set, pencil, notebook as well as crackers and Hariboo gummies!

When was the last time you visited LEGOLAND Malaysia? If you are planning for a visit any soon, I would really suggest that you pop by before the Halloween festivities end on 29 Oct. It is totally worth it if you are coming in with many kiddos, like me!

Thank you for having us over for the event LEGOLAND Malaysia and we still love you very much! We will try to come back for our revenge next year! For the rest of you, there is one more week of celebrations remaining for your kids to take part in the Spooky Trail, so check out https://www.legoland.com.my/planning-your-visit/special-events/halloween-brick-or-treat/ for more details!

Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium

[Media Invite]

We held our wedding at the then Concorde Hotel on 30 December back in 2004, and stayed one night at the suite. It was definitely memorable because we had the company of our friends and family at our wedding dinner, ALTHOUGH I couldn't really remember much of our hotel stay. I only knew I hugged the toilet bowl the entire night due to alcohol intoxication and by the time I woke up, all the red packets were already accounted for by my wife and our good friend! Concorde Hotel became a part of Singapore history a couple of days later, when it was rebranded as Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium on 04 Jan 2005.

Our wedding dinner back in 2004!
In the lift as newly weds back then.
Now we are going up to our room as parents of 4!
So THAT was the really the first and very last time we stayed at the hotel, until we revisited the "new" Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium with our four little rascals for a Fam-tastic Weekend staycation recently! It sure felt nostalgic to walk into the hotel after all these years, and funny as well having to explain to Louie why he was not invited to our wedding when he asked.

They rushed forward to the cute stuff laid out for them on the beds the moment the kiddos got into the room. If not for my pleas for them to stop for me to take photos first, all hell would have broken loose immediately as they fight over who gets which animal bathrobe or what colour toothbrush, which eventually happened after the photos anyway. As part of the package, all the kiddos gets their own welcome pack which consisted of stickers, coloring pencils and sheets, as well as free 30mins play (and other discount coupons) at Waka Waka (located just opposite the hotel)!

Extra stuff like toothbrushes for the kiddos. How I wished they included the bathrobes!

The kid's welcome pack consist of coloring activities, stickers and also DIY paper plane.
The eagle-eyed kiddos spotted a smartphone charging in its port on the table, which offered free calls and Internet. We were given the password to the free WiFi upon check in and the kiddos got me to set it up for them IMMEDIATELY. Such devices are usually a no-no but since it is a staycation, they shall be given some screen time, for now. Soon after we remembered that the hotel provided in-hotel activities for the kiddos between 4pm-5pm and we made our way to the board room, not for meetings but for some water-colour painting instead! I was also asking the hotel staff if we could just leave the kiddos in the activity room with them and she replied it was fine.

Free calls and Internet access with this device provided!

Go for a short shopping trip if you want while the kids exercise their creativity under the watchful eyes of the staff.

Before long I could feel my stomach rumbling and luckily for us, it was just a short walk to Atrium Restaurant at Level 4 of the hotel for their awesome All-You-Can-Eat Wagyu Beef Baikingu buffet! The buffet features a wide variety of local delights and Japanese favourites such as the various types of sashimi and LOTS of wagyu beef! The seafood was worth a mention as well, with fresh shucked oysters, cooked and chilled prawns, crabs and other shellfishes! The one thing I HATE about having buffet, is actually the limited capacity of my stomach. Just sampling all the dishes would have filled my tummy to the max BUT I went for second helpings of the oysters and beef, and thus was not able to try out many of the delicious looking dishes.

How not to get hungry with a spread like this?

Create your own rojak dish!

The kiddos' favourite section of course!

The kiddos were really looking forward to swimming and although it was not advisable to swim after a meal, we made an exception this round because it was movie night by the pool! Every Saturday there will be movie screening by the pool for those who booked under the Fam-tastic package, subject to the weather condition though. Kiddos get to use the special floats in the pools, while popcorns and soft drinks will be served too. As the kiddos rotated between floating in the pool and sitting in their beanbags watching "Up", me and my wife relaxed in our deckchairs, overseeing the four of them. It was lights-out at 10.30pm and we retired for the night.

Relaxing by the poolside!
Soft drinks and popcorn are provided too!

Woke up bright and early the next day and went for another swim with the eldest two, while the wife and two youngest slept in. Having a swim in the morning worked up our appetites and we proceeded back to the Atrium Restaurant for our breakfast together at around 10am. Luckily for us, breakfast only ends at 11am on Sundays and we still had ample time. I had my nasi lemak which was delish, especially the chilli and one can pretty much find all the usual suspects such as egg station, sausages, waffles, pancakes and what nots at the buffet. One thing I must really commend, is the attentiveness of the most of the service staff. They were ever-ready to clear the used plates and would even ask for your choice of drink so that they can serve you, even though the drinks were all there for you to dispense on your own! Two thumbs up for making us feel so welcomed!

Haiz... all good things must come to an end and we had to bid farewell to the comfortable beds and fluffy pillows. But before we made our way home, the front desk staff went into the office to grab a polaroid camera, and took a photo for us as a keepsake. With that, we ended our Fam-tastic Weekend Staycation at Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium.

Thank you for having our family over for the weekend Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium! We had a wonderful time and we look forward to visiting you yet again and soon, but hopefully not having to wait for another 13 years!
