With the blink of an eye, Safari Zoo Run will be in its tenth year come January 2018! In case you do not know yet (which I doubt), the run was actually conceived to commemorate Ah Meng, Singapore Zoo’s famous matriarch, who passed on due to old age in February 2018.
Coincidentally my Steffi was born the following month in March 2018, and I felt as if she was literally growing up with the run, turning 10 too next year. We starting running since 2016 and the next Safari Zoo Run would be our fourth time back. The kiddos are definitely looking forward to it!
Loving our past 3 runs and looking forward to the next! |
As with last year, runners can choose to support the following four teams -
Team Ah Meng
Team Ah Meng supports the conservation of her fellow primate friend, the Raffles’ Banded Langur. Found only in Singapore and Johor, the Raffles’ Banded Langur once thrived across the island. However due to urbanisation, there are now less than 60 of this shy and elusive species left in the wild in Singapore, making them critically endangered.
The Wildlife Reserves Singapore Conservation Fund (WRSCF) supports the Raffles’ Banded Langur Working Group to get a better understanding of the urban ecology of this species and help protect them within their fragile habitat.
Join Team Ah Meng to show your support and raise awareness for the Raffles’ Banded Langur!
Team Canola
Team Canola supports the conservation of her fellow aquatic friends, the sharks and stingrays. Globally, a quarter of shark and stingray species are threatened with extinction, with overfishing being the main threat.
The Wildlife Reserves Singapore Conservation Fund (WRSCF) supports The Dorsal Effect to assess shark and stingray catch in Singapore, from local and surrounding regional waters, something never previously investigated. This study will provide insight not just to inform policies in the country, but also contribute to global data for these animals.
Join Team Canola to show your support and raise awareness for the conservation of sharks and stingrays!
Team Sunny
Team Sunny supports the conservation of his fellow feathered friends, the songbirds. Songbird keeping is a popular pastime in many regions in Southeast Asia. It has been recognized that the capture of birds for the songbird trade is the single largest threat for many species in Southeast Asia.
The Wildlife Reserves Singapore Conservation Fund (WRSCF) supports a research team from the National University of Singapore to assess the health of five songbird species in Singapore. This will help provide a comprehensive outlook for better conservation planning of these birds in Singapore and beyond.
Join Team Sunny to show your support and raise awareness for the conservation of songbirds!
Team Chawang
Team Chawang supports the conservation of his fellow friend in Night Safari, the Sunda pangolin. Found in Singapore, the critically endangered Sunda pangolin are elusive insect-eating animals that are threatened by illegal wildlife trade. It has been identified that pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammal.
The Wildlife Reserves Singapore Conservation Fund (WRSCF) supports a researcher from the National University of Singapore to further the understanding of Sunda pangolin in Singapore. This study will enhance conservation management plans by sharing knowledge about the potential interaction of pangolins with various urbanscapes such as roads.
Join Team Chawang to show your support and raise awareness for the conservation of pangolins!
Team Instagram Contest
Help raise awareness for the endangered animal that your team is supporting by taking part in the team Instagram contest from now till the race day. The team with that spread the most awareness wins. A lucky winner from the winning team will stand a chance to win an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience in our parks!
Step 1: Tell your friends about the endangered animal that your team is supporting.
Step 2: Hashtag one of the teams #TeamAhMeng, #TeamChawang, #TeamSunny or #TeamCanola, plus #SafariZooRun too.
Step 3: Upload your post to Instagram.
Step 4: Make sure that your profile is a public account.
